Top maxi looks to stock up on this summer
We are well into June now and so the time has come to prepare your summer wardrobe. For those of us who love this style of clothing – and it has become really popular in the past decade, becoming workwear, beachwear and even a staple of urban casual wear- stocking up on cheap maxi dresses from high street favourites like New Look can be a viable option for a quick wardrobe update.
But what area the styles, patterns and shapes making a splash for summer 2012?
Prints and patterns
This year, tropical prints are the name of the game. If you’ve noticed in the magazines, and even on the streets, prints have got bolder and more and more inventive as the year has gone by, and this doesn’t look set to stop anytime soon.
With lots of loving for the Hawaiian print, as well as geometric looks and crazy clashes and tribal prints become staples, a bold and busy tropical print maxi dress is a key wardrobe update if you want to take your summer look into 2012 with one easy purchase. New Look has a Zuzi Zuzi tropical parrot maxi (pictured) for £34.99 with a loose waist-tie, which will look great for parties and is also a good option for holidays.
Another print to look out for is the Africa print; this has been big for a few years in leggings and t-shirts, but now we’re seeing it crossover into unlikely places – trouser suits, dresses, bags and even shoes. The bandeau maxi dress is a good urban look, perfect with a cropped jacket and canvas shoes.
Shapes and styles
In terms of shapes and looks, the best shape to be introduced this year is the dipped hem. Imagine a skirts shorter at the front and draped longer at the back, and you’ve got it. This has been a big look in the UK’s major cities for several months, and this summer it’s going to be both practical and extremely trendy.
This zebra print dipped-hem maxi dress is a lovely example – something that works particularly well as summer evening wear, which will give you a little more warmth than a mini dress when the sun begins to set.
